A Dog Owner's Guide to Diarrhea
ðķ The Ultimate Guide to Dog Diarrhea: First Aid, Home Remedies & Gut Health
This article will tell you everything you need to know about dog diarrhea. I will not only explain home remedies and first aid measures to you, but above all, I will tell you a lot of tips on how you can heal and strengthen the intestines—and especially the intestinal flora—of your dog in the long term. I hope that I can help you to get your dog better soon. So let's get started!
ðĻ EMERGENCY WARNING: Read This First!
Super important! If your dog has just got diarrhea—which is why you have found this article—and you don't know how urgent or harmful your dog's diarrhea is, you will find the emergency signs here:
If your dog has really severe diarrhea (watery and he cannot hold it back at all), if it is dark brown, black, or red like blood, if he vomits in addition to diarrhea, or if he has had it for more than three days: Please go to the vet IMMEDIATELY!
Do not hesitate. Don’t wait another night. No, go straight there! The damage and cause can be life-threatening.
ðĶ Why is the gut so important to your dog's health?
The intestine is a massive and incredibly important part of the dog’s immune system (it takes on up to 80% of their immune protection!). And only if the intestinal flora is healthy can your dog properly absorb and utilize all the essential nutrients from its food. A healthy gut means a happy, energetic dog.
â ïļ What are the signs of a disturbed intestinal flora?
Keep an eye out for these common symptoms:
- ð Constipation
- ðĐ Persistent diarrhea
- ðĢ Cramps and abdominal pain
- ðĻ Severe flatulence (gas)
- ð―ïļ Loss of appetite
- ðĨą Slackness or lethargy
- ð Loud rumbling in the intestines
- ðū No motivation for walks or games
- ðĪ Weakened immune system
ðĨĢ First, keep calm and cook light foods
As soon as Bruno has diarrhea for more than a day or I notice that his bowels are rumbling loudly (you can hear that correctly when you put your ear to his stomach), I start a light diet. When I saw Bruno’s first bout of diarrhea, my vet gave me some great advice: she told me not to come by every single time. Because it would be a total “shooting at sparrows with cannons” situation if one were to give harsh medication immediately after just one day of diarrhea or vomiting.
However, if your vet routinely recommends giving medication or heavily medicated food right away in the event of minor diarrhea, you should question this. Drugs often weaken or completely destroy the delicate intestinal flora, and then you are trapped in a total vicious circle. Your veterinarian must definitely know and consider this.
My vet’s tip is that every time your dog has diarrhea, you should feed a light diet for three days, and if the diarrhea still persists, then you go to the vet. In 98% of cases, the topic will take care of itself! Such a statement may mean less “business” for my vet, but I trust her all the more. I have recommended her many times, and everyone was enthusiastic about her and recommended her to others. Honesty certainly pays off in the longer term.
âïļ What exactly is “light food” for your dog?
You can easily prepare light food yourself. I found some great information about this from my colleague Anke from Clean Feeding, who is an absolute specialist in dog nutrition. Quoting her directly:
"For a light diet, you choose feed components that are easy to digest and not stressful. Easily digestible is what they say. The amount of food should be around 2-4% of the dog’s weight. It is also a good idea to ease digestion by having several smaller meals a day at first."
The perfect ratio is:
- ðĨĐ 1/3 meat
- ð 1/3 carbohydrates
- ðĨ 1/3 vegetables
Step 1: Cook the meat
You should cook the meat because it is much easier to digest that way. However, don’t let the water boil and gush wildly; rather, gently “soak” the meat in hot water until it is completely cooked and no longer raw. I always add a little organic chicken stock to the water to make it taste even better. But please make sure that you don’t add too much broth, and strictly use organic quality to avoid excess sodium and additives.
Important: Take a lot of water when cooking the meat! Because in this “meat water” you will cook the rice so that it tastes better. You can also offer your dog the rest of this flavored “meat water” to drink. It always goes down very well with us! Especially with diarrhea, there is always the risk that your dog will become dehydrated, so this is a great trick.
Step 2: Cook the rice and vegetables
Why is there rice with the chicken? Rice is naturally slightly dehydrating, but in this case, we want it to “thicken” the intestinal contents safely without adding harsh chemical drugs like Imodium. If your dog doesn’t tolerate rice at all, you can of course choose boiled potatoes instead, which you should then mash properly. I also mash the boiled carrots into a pulp so that I can mix all the components really well, making it easy on the stomach.
ðĨ Why are carrots great against diarrhea in your dog?
Diarrhea often occurs when bad bacteria or viruses colonize the intestines and release toxins. The prerequisite for this is that the pathogen first attaches itself to the receptors in the intestinal wall.
Here is the magic of carrots: Cooking them for a long time causes the starch molecules to break down into oligogalacturonic acid. These acids mimic the gut's receptors! They can then attach to the intestinal mucosa instead of the bacteria, completely blocking the spots to which the pathogens would otherwise dock. The bad bacteria are simply flushed out.
ð What are the common causes of diarrhea in your dog?
- ð Abrupt change of feed: A new brand, switching from dry to wet, or suddenly moving to raw meat.
- ð Dietary indiscretion: Food that is far too rich in fat, or served too cold.
- ðïļ Spoiled feed: Eating garbage or rotten scraps on a walk.
- ðū Allergies: Food intolerance or a sudden allergic reaction.
- ð Parasite infestation: Roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
- ðĶ Infection by protozoa: Such as coccidia or giardia.
- ð Medications: Side effects of a drug or an anthelmintic (dewormer).
- ðĨ Organ issues: Liver, pancreas, or kidney disease.
- â ïļ Chemical Poisoning: Insecticides, such as from recently sprayed grass.
- ðŠī Plant Poisoning: Ingesting poisonous plants (including parts of the potato or tomato plant).
- ðĨĐ Malicious Poisoning: Poison bait left outside.
- ð° Stress: As a result of fear, nervousness, or other psychological causes.
- ð§ļ Foreign bodies: Swallowed stones, sticks, or pieces of plastic toys.
- ðĨ Chronic inflammation: Long-term issues of the gastrointestinal area (like IBD).
ð§ How do I test if my dog is dehydrated?
Try this simple "skin fold" (turgor) test:
- Lay your dog gently on its side or have them sit calmly.
- Slowly pull the skin up into a fold in the shoulder and neck area (like a tent).
- As soon as you let go of the fold, it should snap back and recede immediately.
- If your dog is long-haired or has a very thick coat, you can use your hand to feel whether and how quickly the wrinkle disappears.
- You can also measure the number of seconds it takes for the wrinkle to recede. If it stays tented for more than a second or two, your dog is likely dehydrated and needs a vet.
ð° What else can you do to help your dog with diarrhea?
Your dog should drink, drink, drink! Always offer your dog fresh water and try absolutely everything to motivate him to drink.
Maybe you boil up some organic chicken broth and offer it to your dog when it has completely cooled down? Mix a little bit of dog-safe liver sausage into the water to make it irresistible. Or, as mentioned earlier, use the leftover "meat water" from when you cooked the light food. Keeping them hydrated is half the battle!
ðą Long-Term Gut Strengthening (Bonus Tip)
Once the acute diarrhea has passed, building up the intestinal flora is vital so it doesn't happen again. Look into high-quality, dog-specific probiotics and prebiotics (like slippery elm bark or special gut-flora powders) to repopulate their digestive tract with healthy bacteria. A strong gut equals a strong immune system!
